Mr Spiteri is the Clinical Lead and Head of the Ophthalmic Department at The Jersey General Hospital.

Born and raised in Malta, he studied medicine at The University of Malta and underwent Ophthalmology training in the London, Kent, Surrey Sussex Deanery where he worked in some of the most prestigious teaching hospitals in the UK including Moorfields, King's College and the Sussex Eye Hospitals.

YAG Laser Capsulotomy or Posterior Capsule Opacification


Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is a relatively common occurrence after cataract surgery and it is easily treatable.




Keratoconus and cross linking


The clear window at the front of the eye, the cornea, is usually a round, even shape. Keratoconus (pronounced keh-rah-toe-cone-us) is when the cornea becomes thinner and bulges outwards in a cone shape. Keratoconus is a progressive condition and can get worse gradually over time. The speed of the change and severity varies between affected people.




Cataract


A cataract is a clouding or opacity of the lens inside the eye. When a cataract develops, the lens becomes cloudy and prevents any light from passing through.
