Anthony V. Spiteri, Consultant & Ophthalmic surgeon, London


Mr Spiteri is a Consultant Ophthalmic (Eye) Surgeon at the Jersey General Hospital. He was born and raised an Islander on the Mediterranean island of Malta and specialises in cataracts, glaucoma and corneal surgery.


After studying medicine at the University of Malta, he underwent Ophthalmology training in the London, Kent, Surrey, Sussex Deanery where he worked in some of the most prestigious teaching hospitals in the UK including Moorfields Eye, King’s College and the Sussex Eye Hospitals. This included attachments in all ophthalmic subspecialties such as cataract, glaucoma, medical retina (including age related macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, vascular occlusions), basic paediatric conditions, oculoplastics etc.

In addition Mr Spiteri undertook fellowship training in Anterior Segment Surgery at the Western Eye Hospital, Imperial College, London. This included complex catatact surgery (eg following trauma/complicated surgery), cornea (including transplants, pterygium and keratoconus) and ocular surface disease (eg dry eyes, microbial keratitis, blepharitis etc). Mr Spiteri is currently setting up the Anterior Segment service in the Channel Islands minimising the need for referrals to the mainland. 

Mr Spiteri maintains an active academic role with the Wessex Deanery, within whose region Jersey operates. His research passion is medical education and in particular Cataract surgical skills training. He has authored several publications in peer-reviewed medical journals in this field winning awards both nationally and internationally . Mr Spiteri has devised a virtual reality training curriculum for cataract surgery and continues to be active within the Education Committee of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He is also a registered examiner for the European Board of Ophthalmologists.

Mr Spiteri is on the Specialist Register of the GMC as an Ophthalmologist. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, a Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology and a member of the UK and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. He also carries out regular visiting consultancy work back in Malta.
